Virtual Reality-Based Treatment Approaches in the Field of Substance Use Disorders

Abstract Purpose Substance use disorders (SUD) are burdening chronic conditions characterized by high relapse rates despite severe negative consequences. Substance-related cues that elicit craving means of automatic physiological and behavioural responses have long been suggested to predict relapse. One major mechanism contributing behaviour cue-induced approach tendencies towards the addictive agent. Recently, there has an emerging interest in virtual reality (VR)-based approaches assess modify its related responses. This review aims at elucidating (1) VR techniques applied field SUD, (2) as induction/assessment tool for biopsychological correlates (3) VR-based therapeutic approaches. Findings There is number studies focusing on different substances abuse incorporating well therapy. Despite some limitations missing randomized controlled clinical trials with large samples data long-term effects treatment, showed consistent results eliciting reducing across substances. Summary suggests a promising assessment treatment among individuals substance disorders. Because ecological validity, unifies benefits laboratory setting advantages realistic environment. Further using more homogenous objective biophysiological markers required.
